Libya.  Bill and Charles

Libya.  Combat chic – Dick and Tim.  It reminds me that the WRAC had developed a range of perfumes for use in the field:  BATTLE BLUSH and ESSENCE OF GRUNT.

Libya.  David Hoyle in a really good fire position

 i.e. no DS in sight.

Libya ? And Mike

Libya 1965.  Towards the end of the exercise.  I remember I was the platoon Radio Operator (Tim Holmes was the runner).

Libya.  End of the exercise and Robin Hulf about to make a rude sign.

A British Army camp in Libya (Green Howards?).  Charles, Robin, Grant, Eddie, Ben all with beer watching some sports match.

Nothing to do with RMAS but the fellow in the beret is George Hays – he was a Captain in 22 Signal Regiment (my first posting) and helped me not to make such a fool of myself.  I worked with him again in 1979 in Loughborough where he was the civvy Adjutant.  Despite his civilian status as an ex RSM and ex-wartime para he had the whole place in a cheerful iron grip!

Bill Legge – one of the chilly blobs on a winter warfare instructors course in Norway with Peter Hallett and Ian Morris.  The Norwegian combat rations are revolting and consist of various dark brown substances with that have been hydraulically rammed into small cubes called (I’m not making this up) ‘Kakky Blocks.’  At night it was frighteningly cold – I slept with Ian Morris who is the only endothermic life form in the universe and owes me thousands of therms.

Bill Legge – despite a lifetime of enthusiastic smoking I became a fanatical runner in my 30’s.  I had/have no ‘ball skill’ whatsoever and was always sad to be in the also-rans at most sports.  Luckily I discovered orienteering and enjoyed many years of the sport.  This photograph was taken in 1981 in Germany – a few weeks before I left the Army and emigrated to Western Australia.
